How to Enjoy: Mickey's PhilharMagic at the Magic Kingdom

Photo: Mickey's PhilharMagic at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World. Copyright 2007 Anne S. Easterling.Come on over to Squidoo and check out my new lens (that's page, in normal speak) on Mickey's PhilharMagic . Here's an excerpt:

If I'm in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, the one attraction that I never miss is "Mickey's PhilharMagic." Donald takes center stage when Mickey leaves him alone with his Sorcerer's Apprentice hat. Hmm, couldn't we see what's going to happen. Donald puts on the hat. Magic is unleashed. And the next 12 minutes is a glorious, in-your-face, three-dimensional journey as Donald tries to rescue the magical hat.

Officially presented by Kodak, "Mickey's PhilharMagic" features Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other animated Disney characters. It's reported that this is the largest collection of characters in any official Disney production. This was also the first time that classic Disney characters were created using computer-generated animation.

I have a listing of all seven songs, a poll to vote for your favorite movie represented by the songs, fun facts and more. Of course, this new lens has part of Mouseopolis , the virtual community for fans of Walt Disney World. Come join us and build a lens about your favorite Disney World attraction .

The Haunted Mansion Recreation on YouTube

The Haunted Mansion is one of my favorites. (Hmm, it seems like I say that about quite a few attractions.) If you have ever tried to take video inside the Haunted Mansion - or viewed one of the many fan-produced videos - you know that it's hard to get good video or photographs because the attraction is so dark.

At last, we fans have an inside look at the Haunted Mansion, thanks to Jeremy Kohrs and Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 . He's recreated the Haunted Mansion in delightful detail. Because it's based on the Disneyland version, the exterior is a bit different. The interior is perfect - hitting all the highlights!

How to Enjoy Pirates This Summer

Photo: Entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean, Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Copyright 2006 Anne S. Easterling. The blockbuster success of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" means that the Pirates attraction at the Magic Kingdom will be even hotter this summer! So what does that mean if you are vacationing at Walt Disney World this summer?

First, expect long lines. Your best option for avoiding long lines is to arrive just as the park opens and head immediately to the attraction. Best route: Go down Main Street, turn left at Casey's Corner and weave your way past everyone waiting for the Crystal Palace. Continue through the entrance into Adventureland and keep walking to your left all the way to the Pirate entrance. Do not get distracted by anything, because even a few minutes' delay can add significant time to your waiting time.

If both sides of the queue are open, take the left side. My experience is that the left side moves slightly faster. Then enjoy the ride! When you exit, skip the shop and check the line. If it's still not too long, get in line again and double your fun.

When you've had enough fun riding the sea with the pirates, then it's time to explore more:

  • Visit the shop, where you can find Mickey Mouse ears with a pirate scraft and earrings, unique t-shirts, play swords, and other treasures.
  • Check the time schedule for Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Tutorial, an interactive experience in Adventureland where you can learn how to be a pirate.
  • Meet characters from Peter Pan, which also features pirates, in the plaza area near the shop.

Not able to get there early? It will be much harder to ride without waiting more than 30 minute (or longer!). Try visiting during the afternoon parade or the evening fireworks show. Many guests leave the rides to wait for the shows that lines are generally shorter during those times.

Important Note: Strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed into the queue. You must park them is a special area left of the entrance. The parking area is much like the stroller parking in Fantasyland. That means, your stroller may be moved while you are gone. Do not leave any valuables!

If you are traveling in August or early September, plan to attend the Pirate and Princess Party at the Magic Kingdom. See dates and more details about the Pirate and Princess Party.

Weathering Summer at Walt Disney World

The First Aid Station at Animal Kingdom is located on the walkway to Africa, right across from this sign.My goodness, summer is extremely warm in Florida! Temperatures soar into the 90s as early as May, and by mid-summer, it's not uncommon for the heat index to hit 100 or more. If you are planning a summertime vacation to Walt Disney World, you and your family must prepare for the heat. Here are top tips for beating the heat.

Be a Robin or an Owl

My No. 1 rule for theme park touring in the summer: Be a robin or an owl! To avoid the heat, be the early bird and arrive about 15 minutes before the park opens. You'll enjoy cooler temps, shorter lines and more fun before the park gets crowded.

Not an earlier riser (especially on vacation)? Then be an owl. Sleep in, and enjoy lunch at your resort. Then head to the parks, enjoy indoor attractions and shows, and do the outdoor attractions in the evenings when the air is cooler. Evening Extra Magic Hours are perfect! Check the park schedules when you arrive.

Regardless of whether you are a robin or an owl (or some of both), drink plenty of fluids. That means at least 4-8 ounces of water every two to four hours. Four ounces -- about a half glass or a good "swallow" at a water fountain -- at least every two hours is best. Soft drinks don't have the same hydrating qualities as water, so that soft drink with lunch doesn't count! Cups of water are complimentary at any restaurant so ASK! Bottled water costs about $2. Water fountains are located next to every restroom and in many other locations in the parks.

And stay covered! Hats are recommended for everyone, especially for the little ones. Fortunately most of the Disney World theme parks have moderate shade and covered walkways. Take a side trip through one of the many gift shops for some shade and cool air.

If you start to feel lightheaded or overcome by the heat, visit the first aid station at the theme parks. The locations are easy to find:

  • Magic Kingdom: Near Main Street USA, between Casey's Corner and the Crystal Palace restaurant.
  • Epcot: In the Odyssey Center, on the walkway between Test Track and the Mexico Pavilion in the World Showcase.
  • Disney-MGM Studios: Near the entrance, next to Sid Cahuenga's One of a Kind shop.
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom: In Discovery Island, next to the Creature Comforts shop, on the left just before entering Africa.

Follow these simple tips for beating the Florida heat, and you and your family will enjoy a wonderful summer vacation at Walt Disney World!

Three Caballeros Featured at the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot

Photo: The volcano and "ancient" temple inside the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot, Walt Disney World. One of my favorite attractions - in a strange sort of way - at Epcot is new and refreshed! The boat ride at Mexico Pavilion on the World Showcase is a wonderful stop on a hot day. Cool, dark and fun, the Rio del Tiempo was nicknamed by many, including me, as "it's a small burrito" because the dancing dolls and catchy music in the final scene reminded us of "it's a small world " in the Magic Kingdom.

Well, some of the same flavor still remains, but the attraction has been revised, updated and renamed as Gran Fiesta Tour featuring the Three Caballeros. Here's the official description from the Disney folks:

Experience the sights and sounds of Mexico on the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros. Take a delightful boat ride and follow the adventures of Donald Duck, José Carioca and Panchito from the Disney film "The Three Caballeros." This fun-filled journey showcases the people, culture, history and arts of Mexico and is enjoyable for all ages.

Photo: Marketplace at the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot, Walt Disney World. In the old ride, we were taken on a historical journey through the culture of Mexico. I really enjoyed the ride because it had a retro style and stayed on the fun side of dorky. The new version keeps much of the same feel, and most guests seem to enjoy the new story line. Donald, Jose and Panchito are on their way to the Gran Fiesta. In typical Donald fashion, the duck gets sidetracked and his two friends must chase him down. The new ride definitely worth the time!

While you are at the Mexico Pavilion, allow time to visit the Marketplace and the other exhibits. There are several small shops with jewelry and women's fashions at reasonable prices.

Introducing Mouseopolis!

Logo: Mouseopolis on Squidoo.I am so excited to announce the launch of a new Disney World resource designed just for you! Mouseopolis is a new Squidoo community for Disney World fans. I can hear you all asking — Mouseopolis? Squidoo?

If you haven’t already heard, Squidoo is where web-page building meets social networking meets Web 2.0. The Chief Squids describe it this way: “Squidoo makes it really really (really!) easy to share your favorite stuff online, discover great recommendations, earn a little dough and even give to charity. All for free.”

So far, quite a few Disney World fans, including me, have found Squidoo and created some amazing (and a few not so amazing) web pages about Disney World. I host a Squidoo group for a few of them. But, this was kind of haphazard and still didn’t help those unknowing masses out there looking for *helpful, organized* information.

This is where it gets fun. I went to the Squidoo people with an idea for creating a more organized group, and they told me about a brand new service they are starting called Communities. Well, not totally brand new, you still build pages (which they call lenses), but they are organized in a new way. Together, we created a new community called Mouseopolis.

My vision is a “library” of pages, created by Disney fans like us, describing every single attraction, restaurant, show and activity at Walt Disney World. The pages will be organized through the Mouseopolis Home, but you’ll have complete control over your page.

What’s in it for you? First of all, it's a place to have fun, brag about your favorite attractions and show off your photos or videos. You can even add money-making modules to your page.

I’m offering a little incentive too! The top pages will be linked directly from the Mouseopolis Home and individual park home pages. If your page is selected for a position on the Home pages, you get a free copy of the ebook version of the EZ Fun to Walt Disney World. Each month, we’ll pick the best pages for more prizes.

So, come and check it out Mouseopolis.

Voices of Liberty: An Epcot Treat!

Photo: USA Pavilion, World Showcase, Epcot. Copyright 2006 Anne S. Easterling.Performing daily at the USA Pavilion, the Voices of Liberty are one of my favorites at Epcot. Dressed in colonial costumes, the eight-part a capella chorus performs patriotic and folk songs throughout the day. They usually perform in the rotunda of The American Adventure. Take a seat on the floor for the best acoustics.

Pick up a Times Guide when you enter the park, and plan a stop at The American Adventure to hear this amazing a capella group. Check out my new page on the USA Pavlion on Squidoo, and vote for your favorite Voices of Liberty song.

To play the videos below, click on the large arrow in the center of the picture. After listening to the songs, then click on the little up and down arrows next to the numbers to vote the video up or down. Like that song? Click the up button to vote it higher. Changes Coming to Spaceship: Earth

Photo: Epcot's Spaceship: Earth. Changes are coming! At long last, Disney and Siemens AG have announced plans for significant updates to Spaceship: Earth at Epcot. Siemens signed on as the official sponsor of Spaceship: Earth in late 2005, and fans have been waiting for news on what updates we might expect. Here's what the Orlando Sentinel said on April 12:

Walt Disney World and Siemens AG are giving Epcot's Spaceship Earth a new spin, updating the ride and its technologies.

Work already has begun in the attraction's post-show area, which is now closed as Disney installs new interactive features to transform it into "Project Tomorrow: Inventing the World of Tomorrow." Broader changes, including updates throughout the ride, will be phased in over the next few months, forcing a closure of the ride later this year.

Spaceship Earth, housed in Epcot's signature structure, a 180-foot geodesic sphere that can be seen for miles, offers visitors a slow, circling, indoor train ride past a series of panoramic scenes depicting the march of time, technology and creativity from cavemen through the late 20th century.

The ride has had minor updates since it opened with Epcot in 1982, but no major overhauls until now.

"We're building on Spaceship Earth's existing attractions and taking it to the next level," said Disney spokeswoman Zoraya Suarez.

The first changes take place in the post-show area, which will reopen late this month with three of several planned new exhibits. The new features will be a 20-foot-high globe offering an ever-changing collage of images of the future; a 3-D game called "Body Builder" enabling visitors to assemble a digital human body; and a driving simulator showcasing motor-vehicle accident and avoidance systems.

For more detail, read the Sentinel's article. The article also notes that all of the changes will be inside Spaceship: Earth. That means the giant Mickey Mouse hand and wand will stay.

Planning for a Short Trip

One of my readers asked this question:

We are travelling to Walt Disney World at the end of April for five nights and four days and staying on site. We have a 4-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. What theme parks would you recommend us seeing? What types of tickets would be our best choice if we went to the parks for three days and took one day to enjoy the resort and relax?

This is a typical situation for families who have a few days for a short vacation. While they will not be able to enjoy every attraction at Walt Disney World, they can enjoy a very nice vacation by planning ahead. Keep reading to see my suggestions.

Quick Tip: Main Street USA

magickingdom2

Inspired by Walt's home town, Main Street USA is your official "Welcome" to the Magic Kingdom. Virtually every location here is dedicated to shopping or dining. You will also find the Main Street railway station, Harmony Barber Shop and the first aid station.

You will pass through Main Street to enter the rest of the Magic Kingdom. Guests enter on the south end, near the railway station. Cinderella's Castle and "The Hub," which connects to other lands, is located at the north end.
