ESPN The Weekend: Coming Feb. 27-March 1

Logo: ESPN The Weekend at Disney's Hollywood Studios.ESPN The Weekend takes over Disney's Hollywood Studios this weekend... bringing delight to sports fans and (probably) some extra frustration to non-sports fans.

What is ESPN The Weekend? It's a three-day special event that brings a few dozen pro athletes and ESPN personalities for some personal interaction with their fans. Here's the official list of activities:

  • ESPN live telecasts and tapings
  • ESPN radio live broadcasts
  • 5K road race and fun run
  • Motorcades and conversations
  • Dream job - the experience
  • ESPN Sports Zone

And here are some more details ...

Live telecasts and tapings:  From a special stage in front of Mickey's Sorcerer's Hat on Hollywood Boulevard, ESPN will present live broadcasts of First Take at 10:00 AM and NFL Live at 4:00 PM on Thursday and Friday (Feb. 26-27). Baseball Tonight will be broadcast at 4:00 PM on Sunday (March 1).

Dream Job - The Experience: Think you have what it takes to be on SportsCenter? Select contestants will experience what it's like to audition for ESPN. They will go through a series of "on-air" tasks, and the audience will select the best "sportscaster" during each show. ESPN personalities and sports celebrities will help mentor contestants as part of the experience.

Motorcades and conversations: Sports stars will ride in motorcades (read: parades) throughout the day and stop by the Sorcerer's Hat stage for interviews and Q and A sessions with guests.

ESPN Sports Zone:  Guests of all ages -- so no excuses, gang! -- can try their skills at several interactive areas, including BMX biking, batting, shooting baskets, throwing passes and more.

5K Road Race and Fun Run: Set for 7 AM Saturday, the race will challenge runners along the course with ESPN and sports trivia. Featuring athletes and ESPN personalities and presented by Dick's Sporting Goods, the 5K will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research, and all participants will receive a T-shirt and finisher's medal. There will also be a Fun Run for kids at 8:30 a.m. To register, visit www.disneyenduranceseries.com.

So what's the frustration?

If you aren't into sports, then steer clear of Disney's Hollywood Studios this weekend.  Walkways will be much more crowded, and all attractions will most likely have longer-than-normal lines (just because there are more people in the park). I also expect that some stage shows might have reduced schedules to accommodate ESPN activities.

So if you're visiting Disney World for multiple days and aren't a sports fan, plan to visit Disney's Hollywood Studios before or after this weekend. There are plenty of activities in the other parks to keep you happily entertained!
